Other names for the additive (synonyms)
International documents show differences in the classification system of food additives, particularly regarding tocopherols.
In the international system of food additive classification and numbering Codex Alimentarius (CXG 36-1989), tocopherols are designated under the general code INS 307 with a Latin letter index from a to c, while γ- and δ-tocopherols have separate codes INS 308 and INS 309.
Meanwhile, in European Union legislation, specifically in Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 and Regulation (EC) No 231/2012, a different numbering system is applied: tocopherols are designated from E 306 to E 309.
Despite coding differences, these designations refer to the same compounds within the tocopherol group (vitamin E) and do not affect identification or safety assessment.
Codex Alimentarius | EU Legislation | Additive Name |
---|---|---|
INS 307a | α-tocopherol (d-alpha) | |
INS 307b | Tocopherol-rich extract (mixed) | |
INS 307c | α-tocopherol (dl-alpha, synthetic) | |
INS 308 | γ-tocopherol | |
INS 309 | δ-tocopherol |
The additive E307b according to Codex Alimentarius CXG 36-1989 refers to a mixed tocopherol concentrate. In European Union legislation, the same substance is classified as the additive with code E306. Detailed information about the origin of the additive, its properties, effects on the human body, and applications can be found in the main article E306 – Mixed Tocopherol Concentrate.
