General Information
Additive E150a is a natural and nature-identical colorant (group – caramel colorants, melanoidins), known as "Plain Caramel Colour I". This additive is a subtype of additive E150 and has the least intense caramel shade.
Colorant E150a has a strong aftertaste and a mild aroma. Its color ranges from yellow to red. "Caramel Colour I" is stable in alcoholic, tannin, and salty environments.
This colorant is produced through thermal treatment of sugar-containing substances or as a result of their decomposition. Most commonly, the sources used are beetroot, corn, or sugarcane.
Food additive E150a dissolves well in water and alcohol and is resistant to light, acidic environments, and temperature changes. In food products, it can also function as an emulsifier.
Main characteristics of additive E150a:
- Colour – caramel, brown.
- Consistency – liquid, thick (solution or powder).
- Taste – slightly bitter.
- Smell – burnt sugar.

Food additive E150a contains melanoidins, which also occur in plant tissues (e.g., in buckwheat). They help protect the body from radiation — including mutations and radiation damage it may cause.
Risks of additive E150a
Additive E150a should be consumed with caution by people with diabetes, as well as those with allergic reactions or individual intolerance to caramel. In addition, excessive consumption may cause gastrointestinal issues such as bloating or constipation.
According to the scientific opinion of the EFSA Food Additives Panel, the additive is considered safe for use in food products.

Food additive E150a is used to color a variety of food products:
- sweets and desserts;
- yogurts;
- jams and preserves;
- chips;
- canned vegetables, fruits, berries;
- meat products – sausages, cooked sausage, pâtés;
- chocolate butter;
- candies;
- alcoholic drinks – whiskey, beer, wine;
- non-alcoholic beverages;
- syrups;
- ice cream.
Caramel coloring is also used as a dye in the production of pharmaceuticals and cosmetic products.
