E420(ii) – Sorbitol syrup

Other names for the additive (synonyms)

E-420(i), E420ii

General Information

Food additive E420(ii) is sorbitol syrup — an aqueous solution of sorbitol obtained by the hydrogenation of glucose.

It is a viscous, clear or slightly yellowish liquid with a sweetish taste and high hygroscopicity.

Sweetener E420(ii) is one of the two forms of the additive E420, along with E420(i) — crystalline sorbitol.

The main difference of additive E420(ii) is that sorbitol syrup contains a significant amount of water, which allows it to dissolve well and distribute evenly in liquid and semi-liquid products.

It is especially widely used in the production of soft drinks, desserts, sauces, candies, and also as a humectant in bakery and confectionery products.

Unlike crystalline sorbitol, E420(ii) more effectively retains moisture and prevents products from drying out. Due to its ability to attract moisture from the air, sorbitol syrup helps extend the shelf life of products.
