General Information
Additive E470b (magnesium salts of fatty acids) is a subtype of additive E470, which encompasses a group of fatty acid salts.
The code E470b is used in accordance with the EU Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008. In the international Codex Alimentarius standard "Class Names and the International Numbering System for Food Additives (CXG 36-1989)" it corresponds to additive INS 470(iii) — magnesium salts of fatty acids.
These compounds are obtained by reacting fatty acids with magnesium salts or hydroxides. The chemical formula depends on the specific acid: for example, magnesium stearate has the formula (C₁₇H₃₅COO)₂Mg, and magnesium palmitate — (C₁₅H₃₁COO)₂Mg.
In industry, magnesium salts of fatty acids are produced from natural fats and oils of plant or animal origin, most often from by-products of oil and fat processing. The process involves saponification of fats followed by the reaction to obtain magnesium salts and their purification.
Additive E470b is a fine white or slightly creamy powder, odorless, insoluble in water and most organic solvents. It has pronounced lubricating, anti-adhesive, and separating properties.
Unlike the subtype E470a (sodium, potassium, and calcium salts of fatty acids), additive E470b exhibits a weaker anti-caking effect but has stronger lubricating properties. Because of this, it is widely used in the manufacture of chewing gums, breath freshening candies, and also in the pharmaceutical industry for producing tablets and capsules.
More detailed information about the health effects and legal status of additive E470b can be found in the main article about additive E470.
