General Information

The food additive E150b, or "Caramel Colour II", is a subtype of colorants in the E150 group (caramel colors). These additives are often simply referred to as "caramel". Colorant E150b is a natural coloring agent used in the food industry to give products a brown color and its shades. The substance is produced by controlled heating of food-grade carbohydrates using a caustic-sulfite process. The main difference between this additive and other additives in the E150 group is the use of sulfate compounds during synthesis, which determine the characteristic taste and consumer properties of the substance.

The main purpose of the "Caramel Colour II" is to impart a brown tint to products. The substance is resistant to light and heat and dissolves well in water.

Benefits of additive E150b

The food additive E150b has undergone many tests and scientific studies, which have not identified any negative effects on the body. The colorant has radioprotective properties and belongs to substances that protect against radiation damage and prevent radiation-induced mutations.

Risks of additive E150b

No harm from additive E150b has been proven. However, there is an acceptable daily intake – no more than 200 mg per 1 kg of body weight.

In the scientific opinion of the EFSA Panel on Food Additives, this additive is considered safe for use in food products.

Uses

The food additive E150b is used to color various products:

  • yogurts;
  • dairy products with chocolate and caramel fillings;
  • jellies and marmalades;
  • canned fruits;
  • beverages – alcoholic and non-alcoholic, including Coca-Cola and Pepsi, as well as spirits;
  • vegetables in oil or brine;
  • vinegar;
  • chocolate spread;
  • cooked meat, sausages, frankfurters, and processed meat products.

This additive is also used to color cosmetic and pharmaceutical products.

Legal Status

The natural food colorant E150b is approved for use in the food industry in all countries worldwide, including Ukraine, the EU countries, and the United States.
