E100(ii) – Turmeric

Other names for the additive (synonyms)

E 100(ii), E-100ii, Turmeric

General Information

Turmeric (food additive E100ii) is a powder obtained from the dried rhizomes of the plant Curcuma longa. It contains a complex of colorants, the main one being curcumin (E100i), as well as other polyphenolic compounds — demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin.

Additive E100i belongs to the group of E100 (Curcumins).

Unlike E100i (Curcumin), which is an extract from turmeric root, additive E100ii is a powder made from dried turmeric root and therefore contains not only curcumin, but also other substances (essential oils, polyphenols, fiber). The curcumin content in E100ii is usually only 2–8%.

Turmeric (E100ii) is a natural yellow plant-based colorant with a mild spicy aroma and slightly bitter taste. The powder is fat-soluble but poorly soluble in water.

Color — rich yellow or orange. In the food industry, it is used as a less concentrated alternative to pure curcumin.

To produce E100ii, turmeric rhizomes are dried and ground into powder. The product may be standardized or mixed with other components to stabilize the color.

Effects on the Body

Benefits

Turmeric and its active compounds provide several health benefits:

  • antiseptic and anti-inflammatory action,
  • improved digestion,
  • antioxidant effect,
  • support for liver and gallbladder function.

In traditional medicine, turmeric is used for colds, sore throat, digestive disorders, and as a general tonic.

Thanks to its curcumin content, E100ii also shows potential in the prevention of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.

Harm

When consumed in moderation, turmeric is considered safe. However, high doses may cause stomach irritation, especially in people with ulcers or gastritis.

It is not recommended to consume large amounts of E100ii during pregnancy without consulting a doctor.

It is also important to control the origin of the raw material — low-quality turmeric may contain contaminants (such as lead or mineral colorants) that are hazardous to health.

Uses

E100ii is used in the food industry as a colorant and spice. Thanks to its pleasant aroma and distinctive color, it is added to:

  • mustard,
  • curry,
  • marinades,
  • sausages,
  • ready-made meals (rice, vegetable mixes, soups),
  • canned goods,
  • cheeses,
  • baked goods and confectionery.

Turmeric is also used as a natural dye in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

Legal Status

The food additive E100ii is approved for use in Ukraine, the European Union, and the United States. It is recognized as safe when used within the acceptable limits set by the Codex Alimentarius.
